2013-10-30 - Wednesday - Facing the ending and beginning

Wednesday I finished working on the smirker and started on the next one.  Not sure where this is going with the exaggerated brow and nose.  As always, I'll see how it develops.

2013-10-29 - Tuesday - Continued expressions

Made more progress on the face tonight.  The mouth was pitching me fits and I haven't even gotten to the eye details yet which always make me crazy.  Stay tuned.

2013-10-27 - Sunday - New expressions

I am trying to make more expressive faces and this is my first real try at that.  I think he's off to a good start but there's a lot more detail that needs to be done.

2013-10-24 - Thursday - Clayworks

Thursday I went to Clayworks and found Steve Maag working away at the wheel.  He's enjoying his class and is making some great stuff for his first time out.  Maybe he'll get hooked like the rest of us.

After checking in with Steve I threw a lid for my cookie jar.  I wanted to make him looking up at the opening for the cookies, but I'm afraid he just looks a little bit stoned.  Oh well.

I also threw two more blanks to use for more faces.

2013-10-23 - Wednesday - Saint John the Baptist Cathedral

Before we left town on Wednesday morning we walked over the Saint John the Baptist Cathedral to have a look at the inside of this beautiful church.  We weren't disappointed.  It was magnificent.

After a quick look around it was back in the car and home again.

That night I had a class at Clayworks and worked on another face pot.  (bottom photo)

2013-10-22 - Tuesday - Balcony shots

I stayed in and did some work on Tuesday.  I was hoping to get to the SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) museum, but I had too much to do.  I guess I'll save it for another time.

Our last night in Savannah was a bit misty --the weather, not us.  Although we enjoyed exploring the city, we weren't all choked up about it.  I would really like to go back again to see more of it and find out more about its fascinating history.

2013-10-21 - Monday - Savannah museums

Monday I visited the Telfair Museums of Art.  The Telfair Academy is a classical art museum in the original Telfair mansion.  One of the most striking paintings is The Black Prince at Crecy by Julian Story.  It's a 13' x 17' oil painting from 1888.  Another very moving painting is Relics of the Brave by Arthur Hacker.  There are many extraordinary paintings in there but since no photography is allowed you'll have to take my word for it.

Next I went to the Jepson Center, a museum housing some more modern art along with a near-east exhibit that featured dishes and bottles, some from as far back as 10 B.C.

There was an Andy Warhol exhibit mounted that concentrated on his screen prints inspired by JFK's assassination.  It was one of the first times that images had been lifted from the news media and used in repetitive sequences.  Quite moving, along with a monitor showing the Zapbruder film on a continuous loop.  It still gives me shivers to see that loop.

Another current exhibit was an extensive collection of oil paintings by Robert Henri.  The collection focused on his Spanish Sojourns where he painted dancers, picadors, gypsies, and peasants.  Apparently Henri was a leader of the Ashcan School of American Realism, forsaking his earlier interest in impressionism.  He was an organizer of landmark show, The Eight and was included in The Armory Show which I just learned about on NPR recently.  A lot of history and a lot of very beautiful paintings.  I was so taken with them that I purchased a small poster commemorating the show.
