2016-03-04 - Friday - A day

Friday morning I had a nice breakfast of soft-boiled eggs, rice, and spinach, with sriracha sauce. Good start to the day with lots of protein and flavor.

Yum.

Friday evening Karen and I went to the Southern Spring Show. In our travels through the garden section we noticed some familiar artwork.

2010-04-09 Friday - Clayworks Spring Sale

Friday was the annual Spring Sale at Clayworks.  It's a venue for studio artists and teachers to sell their wares and have a bit of socializing at the same time.  I always love to see how well everyone cleans up since most of the time we see everyone in their clay clothes.  I still wear my clay clothes at the sale since I am generally there to demo.  I love demoing at the sales since it's a chance to have some fun on the wheel and talk to everyone while I'm doing it.  Imagine that.  (It has a lot to do with that extrovert thing.)

During the height of the sale it got pretty crowded up front by the pottery but I was in the back doing the demos, so my pictures are all after the crowds had dissipated and I had taken a break.

After the sale I went over to Twenty Two to meet Elaine, Paul, Scott, Will, and Barbara.  It was very nice time and I had my first Ellie's Brown Ale on tap and that was quite nice too.  I would like to go back there soon.

2010-01-23 Saturday

I went to Clayworks on Saturday to do a raku firing and make pots (go figure!).

I didn't get any pictures of the raku (hopefully someone else did).  I fired two pots and Becky did some horsehair birds, among others.  It was a good firing and it went pretty smoothly.

I threw some pots but forgot to take pictures of them again and put them away.  Doh!

Luckily I DID remember to take pictures of Chuck making one of his biggest pots yet.  He is taking Tomoo Kitamura's sculpture class and has thrown the bottom portion of this pot and is now adding coils and smoothing them as he goes.  I not only applaud Chuck's expertise, but his patience.  I don't have the diligence to stay on one piece that long.  This pot is going to be amazing.  I'll keep you posted.

Chuck adding the first coils to his thrown piece.

Further along the process (much later in the day).

Friday 2009-04-03 Clayworks Spring Sale

Friday was the Clayworks Spring Sale. There were beautiful pieces of art everywhere you looked. It really was a surreal experience being surrounded by all that work from all those talented people all in one place.

There was music, food, and folks shopping.

Some old friends stopped in to see us and spend some time. I got to demo with Ju-Ian. I was throwing and she was altering and hand building. It was a lot of fun and I hope we can do it again soon.

LuAnn came by to see Elaine
and it was nice to see her again after such long time.

No pictures, please.
(Look at that thenar eminence
not to mention the hypothenar.
She could throw some great plates.)

Tomoo Kitamura workshop

Tomoo Kitamura came to Clayworks on Saturday for a workshop. He uses a combination of throwing and coil building to create large sculptural pieces as well as throwing conventional forms of pottery. It was a great workshop. Tomoo's presentation was very informative and entertaining and he showed us some great methods.

He makes it look very easy.

The audience is rapt.

The head grows taller.

While waiting for the head sculpture
to dry a bit it's back to the wheel.

Explaining throwing off the hump
and making yunomi.

Further along.

Trimming yunomi on a thrown chuck.

More trimming.

Closing the head sculpture.
As you can see, he has done some line carving on it.

After Tomoo left, the studio
was quickly put back to normal.

You can find my whole set of workshop photos here.

You can see more pictures of the workshop on Becky's blog here.

You can see even more photos from Ed here. Thanks, Ed!

Check them all out since they all offer a different view of the class.
