90 - finally moving forward again

I ran by the studio for about two hours on Saturday and threw six more pots. Unfortunately I forgot to photograph them .

Onward and upward.

Lots of work, but no throwing (still at 84)

I worked six hours at the studio Friday night and still didn't get to throw any new pots. I spent all my time trimming, slipping, stapling, and collaring. I only have one more week to get the last pots out. I worked until 2:00 am and still and 84...

This bowl was too dry and it split
when I tried to trim it.
Greg and I discussed some options.

After some stapling with nickel-chromium wire to stop the splits and look decorative, Greg gave me a piece of one of Adrienne's broken pots thrown with the Craig's clay and some of his porcelain balls (soft porcelain with mason stain mixed into it). Thanks Greg, I'm honored. Lemons=lemonade.

Greg and I decided recently that attaching things to pots with wire should be called 'Lenzoing' after Peter Lenzo since he does a lot of that in his work. Another noun becomes a verb, like 'text'. "Text me later." "I'm gonna Lenzo this shard on here." I hope Mr. Lenzo doesn't take offense since it is used with respect.

but it was only as high as the
white, slipped part before I fluted it
and added a thrown neck.
Trust me, it looks better as a taller pot.

Kiln opening, lid trimming and pots

As always there was a lot happening in the studio Thursday night. After the regular classes, Julie, Greg, and Ro opened their kiln. Elaine, Becky, and Sunshine also showed up for the festivities. It was a fine firing and everyone was pretty pleased with their pots.

Becky and Elaine had some test tiles in the kiln to try out some of their new glazes.

With all the kiln opening festivities I didn't get a chance to throw any more pots tonight. Hopefully I will get some things made Friday night.

Somehow in all the hub-bub I missed getting a picture of Ro's work, which was wonderful. Sorry, Ro!

The folks firing the kiln were very kind to include a few of my pieces. We were anxious to see how the new underglazes worked out and they came out pretty well.

I trimmed up this lid tonight.
It's one of the new style ones that
are hollow from the bottom of the
interior flange to the top of the point.

the way the line follows from the lid to the pot.
I am pleased with the dimensions on this one.

Glazing and drawing

I went in late on Wednesday and glazed my slap trays. I had put a lot of different slips on them before the bisque firing and I added some red and yellow underglaze. I then put spotted shino over the whole piece and poured some clear in certain areas. I sprayed some iron oxide wash over the whole thing. Not pictured here, I dipped some marbles in alfred blue before placing them on the trays.



I tried drawing some images on some of the slipped pots, but I'm not too sure about it. Time will tell if they're keepers. Before I try any more of these I really should start doing some practice sketching. These are some of them with drawings off the top of my head.








Thursday, on from eighty-five...

84 (could have been 85...)

Tuesday night I trimmed and handled some mugs and trimmed some other pots. Unfortunately one (one of my favorites, of course) was too dry and it collapsed under my grip. I guess I had a bit too much grasp on the situation.

I then slipped a bunch of pieces (Ron and Doug, don't look!) with the idea of trying some decorating. We'll see how it goes or they might go into the slop bucket.

I couldn't leave the studio being down one pot, so even though it was late I threw four more pots (all off the same hump). I'll have to throw more off the hump tonight since it's "hump day".
