Friday we attended the Empty Bowls event for Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina. It gets bigger every year and we are always glad to be there. I'm honored to be asked to do wheel demos at the event.

2018-01-30 - Tuesday - Empty Bowls and crazy

Still working on Empty Bowls, I trimmed some more feet.

Someone said, "You have to be crazy enough." I liked it so much I wrote it on the white board in the members area. Someone else added the response. True enough.

2016-03-10 - Thursday - Empty Bowls

Thursday was Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina's Empty Bowls. Adrienne, Kimberly, and I went to the convention center and demoed during the event. I threw on the wheel, Kimberly showed hand-building, and Adrienne talked to people about Clayworks and helped out with the volunteers.

After lunch the MC, Maureen O'Boyle interviewed Adrienne up on the stage.

Soon it was time to pack up and take everything back to Clayworks.

Now it's time to start on next year's contributions.

2016-02-10 - Wednesday - Empty Bowls out of the kiln

Wednesday I checked out the bowls I made towards Claywork's donation to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina's Empty Bowls event. I think they came out pretty well. I hope they'll be popular at the event. Reminder: Get tickets before they sell out.

For the last few years I like to try something different and loosen up a bit more each year. I wonder what next year will bring.

After photographing the bowls and putting them away again I threw some pots. I feel kind of rusty right now and I'm throwing some tentative forms trying to get my balance back.

2016-01-20 - Wednesday - Empty Bowls

January means Empty Bowls for the Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina Empty Bowls event. At Clayworks we donate 300 bowls every year and I am honored to help make them. This is the first batch of many.

Empty Bowls is a wonderful event and you should go, but get tickets now as they ALWAYS sell out.

On Saturday I went to Clayworks to work on Empty Bowls for the Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina's Empty Bowls event. I'll be making them for at least a week and then I will be glazing them next week.

2015-03-13 - Friday - Empty Bowls

Friday was the Second Harvest Food Bank's Empty Bowls event. Every year Clayworks contributes 300 bowls to this great fundraiser. That's just a portion of the work donated as several other potters are involved.

At this year's event, Kimberly demonstrated handbuilding, I demoed on the wheel, and Adrienne circulated and took photos. We talked to a lot of people about Clayworks, had a nice lunch, and did some real good for our community.

2015-01-22 - Thursday - Glazing bowls

Thursday I glazed another batch of bowls for the Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina's Empty Bowls event. I played with slip, underglaze, wax resist, and glazes on the surfaces again. I'm really getting into my surfaces these days.

February 28 - Thursday Empty Bowls and Glazing

Thursday was the 13th Annual Empty Bowls event for the Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina.  It's the event that all our furious bowl-making leads up to.  It culminates in a large crowd of people lining up to come in and choose a bowl, take part in a silent auction, and have lunch.  It's a wonderful time.  Everything is donated so Second Harvest receives the proceeds to continue their important mission.  It's amazing how many pounds of food they distribute to people that need it, and there are more people right now that need it than ever.

Kimberly and I demoed in the lobby and talked to folks about Clayworks.  I'm pleased to report that there was a lot of interest.  Several people stopped by at the wheel and told me that they chose one of my bowls, which made me feel good.  It's always nice to know people enjoy your work.

It's almost time to get started making for next year.  I have some ideas for new glazes combinations...

Thursday evening, it was back to Clayworks to glaze some pots for the wood kiln firing with Hal and Corine at Dedmond Pottery.  Once again, I was trying some new ideas (go figure!).  I spoke with Greg and he was kind enough to give me some new directions to explore.  We shall see what emerges.

September 27 - More awards

On Thursday the Second Harvest Food Bank had their awards luncheon for organizations that regularly help them.  Clayworks was awarded for supplying 300 bowls every year to the Empty Bowls event.  Adrienne asked several of us who make the bowls to attend the luncheon with her.  It was a nice event with good food donated by Best Impressions Catering.

We've already started making bowls for the 2013 event in March.

Empty Bowls 2011!

Friday was the annual Second Harvest Food Bank Empty Bowls event and it was very well attended.  If you are unfamiliar with the event, you pay $25 and you pick a bowl from a very crowded table.  You take it to the counter where they wrap it for you and put it in a bag.  Next, you go through the silent auction tables and bid on some wonderful items, then it's on to the buffet line and you eat lunch.  During lunch several speakers share the milestones Second Harvest Food Bank has achieved in the previous year and thank all the sponsors and donors.  And, if all that wasn't enough, there are drawings for door prizes.

Thanks to all the sponsors and donors for a wonderful time and thanks to all the potters for making and donating the great bowls. 

Most of all, thanks to Second Harvest Food Bank for all the amazing things they do to feed the hungry in our community.

2010-01-08 Friday Clayworks (1:37 am)

The time on my pictures tells the story:  I was cleaning up at 1:37 am Friday after throwing Thursday night.  I was trying out some larger (huge) mug shapes since my last set shrank to miniatures.  I also decided to try some rimmed bowls and trimmed my bowls for the Empty Bowls project.  This project supports the Second Harvest Food Bank and Clayworks makes a large number of bowls for the event each year.  If you are in the area on February 26th between 11:30 am and 1:30 pm please make plans to attend.
